Doctors
Dr. Deal is proud of the practice he has built, with three state-of-the-art operating rooms and 7 medspa locations. Dr. Deal and Southern Surgical Arts were the First Plastic Surgery Center recognized by the SRC as a Center of Excellence in Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery.
By focusing on quality, compassionate care, and adherence to strict professional standards, Dr. Gardner has distinguished himself as a rising leader in Chattanooga’s medical community.
Dr. Gardner serves as a principal in The Vein Institute, the latest addition to our comprehensive portfolio of cutting edge patient services offered at our state-of-the-art surgical facility in Chattanooga’s Southside. Additionally, he serves as a faculty member of Southern Surgical Arts’ American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship Program, through which he trains talented surgeons from around the country every year. The surgeons who complete the fellowship program are eligible to become certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS). Dr. Gardner is an ABCS Board examiner, and is certified by the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine.
He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and continues to adhere to their strict guidelines for ongoing education, high practice standards, and ethical conduct. His society memberships include the American College of Phlebology, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the Hamilton County Medical Society and the Tennessee chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Gardner received his B.S. in Biology from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. and his M.D. from the University of South Alabama, College of Medicine in Mobile, Ala. where he was elected into the AOA honor medical society. He did his surgical training at the Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Ala. During his chief resident year he was the Outstanding Resident in Surgery winning the Hugh Linder Award.
Dr. Gardner currently lives on Signal Mountain with his wife and their two children.
Dr. Summers path to medicine began after returning from Guatemala at the University of Utah, earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Physiology, and earning a coveted designation on the Dean’s List for his academic achievements.
“I have always been fascinated by the human body, it’s amazing ability to heal and adapt. This naturally led me into the pursuit of medicine, which is as dynamic as the human body.”
Dr. Summers earned his medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, excelling in neuromuscular medicine. Learning how to heal with your hands is a vital part of what it takes to be a surgeon. While there, he served as President of the neuromuscular medicine chapter, representing the school at various national meetings.
Following his medical school training. Dr. Summers moved to Long Island, NY, where he spent 5 years learning the art of general surgery. It was intense and comprehensive surgical training, including countless hours on the plastic and reconstructive surgical teams. Dr. Summers would come to be known for his compassion, leadership, and operative skills and would serve as a chief resident during his 5th year of training. His dedication to advancing surgical knowledge and patient care is evident through his published research on breast cancer and new innovations in breast cancer treatment. Dr. Summers also received special recognition for his outstanding service during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Dr. Summers then went on to complete fellowship training in general and facial cosmetic surgery with Southern Surgical Arts. He has always had a passion for cosmetic surgery and his patients will attest to his honesty, compassion, and knowledge of cosmetic surgery.
Dr. Ray now has settled with his 2 Children on Lookout Mountain and is enjoying the the southern life. His surgical practice is quickly becoming known for natural aesthetics and refined body sculpting. In addition to surgery, Dr. Ray is actively working on a research regarding pain management and the reduction of opioid consumption in cosmetic surgery. Additional research being conducted includes topics around scar management, and drainless tummy tucks with extensive liposuction.
Dr. Ray is an active member of the American College of Ostoepathic Medicine, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, American Hernia Society, and American College of Osteopathic Surgery.

Without seeing you and examining you it is hard to really weigh in on it....but if you have a bulge in the upper abdomen and your surgeon says you likely tore some of the sutures then you likely do have a recurrence of your DR. The good news is since you have a FDL vertical scar it can be opened and the muscles addressed directly instead of going through your horizontal incision and having to dissect all the way up to the upper abdomen. I would not be afraid...meaning if it...

Based on the 2 photos it does appear you have some abdominal wall laxity....however It is hard to say for sure without examining you and discussing your clinical course. A few questions I would want answered. How did it look initially after your procedure? Did it look flat and has it changed and now it protrudes? Have you been doing a lot of exercises that would put pressure on the repair and gradually cause it to fail? Over what time frame did it start to protrude? Again, hard to...

Interesting question. I'll start by saying after having had a midline abdominal incision for colon cancer surgery you likely have a weakness in the form of a ventral hernia. That would be the most common problem. Unfortunately, after midline incisions is is very common to have a weakness/hernia that reveals itself down the road. This is clearly different than a diastasis which is a general laxity of the abdominal wall and not a hernia or hole in the abdominal wall. You...
