Smartlipo MPX is laser liposuction and it can be a rewarding procedure. Smartlipo is a name for a specific type of laser-assisted liposuction developed and manufactured by Cynosure.
Smartlipo is FDA approved and is used for body contouring, evolving over a period of 4 years from a laser with a single wavelength, then a dual wavelength (Smartlipo MPX = Multiplex) and now Smartlipo Triplex, which utilized 3 specific laser wavelengths.
Why the evolution? It is because Cynosure is committed to developing a laser system for liposuction that will target the specific destruction of fat cells, while simultaneously targeting the skin, promoting skin tightening through collagen production and collagen re-structure.
The newest model, the Smartlipo Triplex utilized 3 wavelengths that permit a highly specific treatment of fat and skin tightening. Since the Smartlipo utilized a fine fiber optic laser, it is a procedure that can be done under local anesthesia with very good results.
Patients can go back to their normal activities of daily living, and work, a day or two after the surgery, in the majority of cases. It may also be done under general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.
It is a very rewarding procedure, as many patients do not want to undergo body contouring procedures that are associated with significant scars and prolonged recovery. This is a great alternative to surgical procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), neck lift, arm lift, and other body lifts.
Of course, patient selection and surgeon technique and judgment are imperative for a satisfactory outcome. Patient expectations must be realistic and if patients understand the limitations and accept the benefits and risks, it is a very rewarding procedure.
It does not preclude doing skin-excising techniques later, so this is still an option that is not eliminated. In my practice, it has been uncommon for patients to return and request skin excision.
Skin excision can also be done simultaneously with SmartLipo MPX if this is determined to be the best combination of procedures for an individual patient. (Christine A. Petti, MD, Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon)
