How To Reduce Swelling After Tumescent Liposuction?

Most swelling after tumescent liposuction is very temporary and requires no treatment. However, some people are more prone to swelling and it may take a few days to disapate. An injection of Celstone (cortisone) may be necessary in unusual cases.

The most important thing to do is to wear a compression garment for one to two weeks after the procedure. (William P. Coleman III, MD, Metairie Dermatologic Surgeon)

There is considerable swelling after liposuction procedures. It is temporary and will resolve slowly over 6-12 months.

To speed up the healing process, compression garments should be worn for the first 2 weeks and external mechanical massaging should be started by week 3 to reduce the swelling. (David Finkle, MD, Omaha Plastic Surgeon)

Cortisone

The most important thing you can do after your Liposuction procedure to help with swelling is to wear your compression garment as instructed by your surgeon.

In our practice, patients are instructed to wear their liposuction garment at all times (day and night) for four weeks after their procedure.

Wearing the garment at night for another 2 weeks is also recommended. They should only remove the garment to shower in the first four weeks after surgery.

Avoid situations where you may become overheated (Sitting out in the sun, taking a hot bath, outdoor exercise in the heat).

Absolutely do not go into a sauna, hot tub or steam room. While we definitely want you to move around some after surgery, use good judgement. If you have been active and notice increased swelling, slow down your activity and rest for a while.

As always, follow your surgeon’s instructions in order to achieve your best results. (Christopher J. Morea, MD, Raleigh-Durham Plastic Surgeon)

Some swelling is normal after lipo.

Since tumescent liposuction involves the injection of fluid into your tissues, it is normal to experience some swelling after the procedure.

A compression garment makes a huge difference by helping the body to eliminate any remaining fluid through applying pressure to the treated area.

It’s also a good idea to avoid salt as much as possible, since sodium encourages fluid retention. Some amount of movement also encourages the reduction of swelling, but remember to take it easy and don’t overdo it.

Finally, try to be patient. Post-operative swelling only lasts a very short time in the grand scheme of things, and soon you’ll be enjoying your new, slimmer figure. (Frank Campanile, MD, Denver Plastic Surgeon)

A combination of time and compression is the best solution

After tumescent liposuction, it is a good idea to view the compression garment your surgeon issues as your best friend. Not only will it help your skin conform to your new contours, but the constant low pressure definitely helps expel any remaining fluid, which is the primary cause of the post-operative swelling following tumescent liposuction.

It is also important to keep moving without getting too active. If you notice that your swelling increases, take a rest. And finally, be sure to drink plenty of fluids and avoid salty and high-sodium foods that can make you retain water and worsen the appearance of swelling. (David N. Sayah, MD, FACS, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon)

Swelling after liposuction is normal. The best way to help it along is really good compression. Also do not go crazy eating salty food post op since this tends to prolong swelling. (Scott W. Vann, MD, FACS, Savannah Plastic Surgeon)

Wearing your compression garment all the time for the first 6 weeks, and doing gently massage in the areas treated will help with swelling. If your garment becomes loose during this time, you may need a smaller size or add spanks under the garment.

For all the swelling to be completely gone, it may take up to six months. (Connie Hiers, MD, San Antonio Plastic Surgeon)

Swelling following a liposuction procedure can persist for over a month. Do wear the pressure garment for at least 4 weeks 24×7,following the procedure. Anti inflammatory & anti oedema meds are continued for a week post op.

We also recommend our patients to have lymphatic massage 7-10 days following the procedure. It helps to reduce the swelling & soreness to an extent. (Sameer Karkhanis, MS, DNB, India Plastic Surgeon)
