Statement: Dr. Gary J. Alter has been a double-board-certified plastic surgeon for nearly three decades. One of the first physicians to be certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Urology, Dr. Alter specializes in genital plastic surgery, including genital aesthetics and reconstructive procedures. His bicoastal practice includes locations in both Beverly Hill, California, and New York City.

Over nearly three decades, Dr. Alter has performed over 10,000 genital surgeries and pioneered both male and female aesthetic genital procedures, as well as gender confirmation surgeries. He has invented many surgical techniques that have been adopted by other plastic surgeons in the field, including the Alter central wedge labiaplasty (aka the Alter “V” labiaplasty), which preserves the original labia edge and reduces postoperative pain.

Dr. Alter received his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, where he also completed a surgical residency. He went on to complete a urology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and a plastic surgery residency at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was also selected as a fellow for the genitourinary reconstruction and plastic surgery program at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia.
