Double Chin Options ~ Doctors’ Opinions
There are a variety of ways to contour the chin and reduce an unwanted double chin. Chin liposuction can provide dramatic results after just one session, and for years has been the best method available to reduce a double chin.
However, the past year has seen non-surgical options become FDA approved, and many people are taking advantage of the lesser downtime required with these procedures.
Kybella is an injectable treatment which uses deoxycholic acid to “melt” submental fat under the chin, while CoolMini is an innovative new applicator from CoolSculpting that can “freeze” the fat.
ThermiTight is another option, which uses radio frequency technology to reduce chin fat.
These treatments may require multiple sessions for best results, but they are not surgical and do not require downtime. (William Groff, DO, San Diego Dermatologist)
Submental adiposis
Double chin and under-chin fullness can be inherited from somebody in your family. The subcutaneous fat deposits under then chin (the submental region) are usually not very responsive to routine diet and exercise.
Treatment of a double chin depends very much on the elasticity of your skin — in younger patients the skin retains excellent elasticity and will usually tighten up very nicely after a procedure.
The two most common treatments for “submental adiposis” or double chins are submental liposuction or deoxycholic acid (Kybella) injections. Submental liposuction is a surgical procedure performed through a few small (less than 1cm) incisions. It takes around 30 minutes to complete, and the biggest side effects are bruising and swelling.
The recovery period usually lasts from 7-10 days. Kybella injections are performed 6-8 weeks apart. Multiple small amounts of Kybella are injected into the submental region.
Most patients report significant fullness and tenderness under their chin for 1-2 weeks after injection, and most patients will require between 2-4 treatments overall.
For people how have lost most of their skin elasticity, liposuction may need to be performed in conjunction with a neck lift to address the redundant skin laxity. (Daniel J. Liebertz, MD, Kirkland Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Genetics can play a bigger role in a double chin than age or weight. There are several options to help you look your best.
A non-surgical chin augmentation can add projection to the chin/jawline minimizing the appearance of a double-chin.
By carefully placing dermal filler (like Juvederm Voluma) to the chin and jawline, the area underneath the chin is smoother. This treatment is performed in-office in about 20 minutes. The results are immediate and there is little-to-no downtime.
I like to see patients back in about two weeks from their initial treatment to assess their progress and see if we can finesse their results. Patients often choose this treatment based on the recovery time over traditional surgical methods.
The results are natural and predictable. I like to use Juvederm Voluma for non-surgical chin augmentation because it’s consistency adds volume and structure. Since it’s a Hyaluronic Acid, the substance is reversible, offering you ultimate control over your treatment results.
Liposuction to the area can also be beneficial. This can also be combined with non-surgical chin augmentation. Lastly, a chin implant with or without liposuction can also be helpful.
This procedure would be performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. (David C. Mabrie, MD, Bay Area Facial Plastic Surgeon)
This appearance could be from anatomic issues that have nothing to do with fat in the area. However, if you have supraplatysmal fat, chin liposuction may be a reasonable help in your situation. (Kenneth B. Hughes, MD, Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon)
Even though you are very slim there can still be fatty deposits located in the neck above and below the platysmal muscle. This is known as subplatysmal fat. A neck lift would treat both of these stubborn fatty deposits by surgically removing them and tightening the platysma, also known as a platysmaplasty.
This will give a much more defined jaw line. (William Portuese, MD, Seattle Facial Plastic Surgeon)
In order to have double chin , an individual does not need to be overweight or not to be young. Individuals with ” weak lower Jaws” or recessed chin could have hanging soft tissues below their chin or in the upper neck known as having “double chin” , which could be corrected by injection of some fillers ( Radiesse ) or by insertion of a chin implant.
Sometimes more complicated / ivolved surgical intervention may be necessary to bring the lower jaw forward and correct the crossed bite. (Fereydoon S. Mahjouri, MD, Minneapolis Plastic Surgeon)
Some people have a deposit of fat in their submental (below the chin) region. This is not always related to body weight. In order to decide on the best treatment for you, a thorough consultation should be performed with analysis of the chin position, skin excess and laxity, and fat amount and position.
Most young people with too full of a neck do not have redundant skin, but an excess of fat. This is usually hereditary. These patients are usually very good candidates for submental liposuction. This procedure is simple, performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient, with minimal downtime and a very low complication rate. (Jonathan Sykes, MD, Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon)
