Does Liposuction Remove Stretch Marks?

Liposuction will not remove your stretch marks. Stretch marks are caused by ruptures of the elastin fibers in your dermis, and this is not affected by liposuction, which removes fat deep to this layer.

The best solution for stretch marks is to physically excise them, as would be done during a tummy tuck. The creams which are advertised everywhere are really not effective for this problem either. Sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news. (Nina S. Naidu, MD, FACS, New York Plastic Surgeon)

Liposuction can make stretch marks worse

Liposuction is effective and popular technique to recontour the body. It works on the deep layers of fat to help remove volume and reveal your inner curves.

A great results with liposuction is dependent on the quality of overlying skin.
If this skin has been damaged and has stretch marks, removal of additional fat will cause additional sagging of the skin. If this is a concern, your best bet may be to combine liposuction with a small lift procedure that can remove the extra skin. (Pat Pazmino, MD, FACS, Miami Plastic Surgeon)

Liposculpting will not improve stretch marks and may make them worse

Any type of liposuction will not help or improve stretch marks. In fact removing fat from beneath skin that has stretch marks may deepen the stretch marks and make them look worse.

Laser treatments can improve but not remove stretch marks. (Brooke R. Seckel, MD, FACS, Boston Plastic Surgeon)

Liposuction does not improve stretch marks

Liposuction does not improve stretch marks, and in some cases, can actually worsen the appearance of the skin if a large number of stretch marks are present. Stretch marks are a sign of irreversible skin injury; skin with significant stretch marks has lost much of its inherent elasticity.
Thus, if liposuction is performed, and skin is not removed, it may actually hang and droop more than it did prior to the liposuction. (Sam Jejurikar, MD, Dallas Plastic Surgeon)

Liposuction and stretch marks

There is no cure or treatment for stretch marks other than excision as in a tummy tuck. Removing fat below stretch marks will possibly accentuate their appearance by removing the fat that plumped them up.

Also, the result of the liposuction will be compromised because stretch marked skin does not shrink as well as normal skin. (Richard P. Rand, MD, FACS, Seattle Plastic Surgeon)

Liposuction has no effect on stretch marks

Liposuction removes fat from under the skin. It has no effect on stretch marks. If a lot of fat is removed, the skin may become looser and this could make the stretch marks more visible. (Parham Ganchi, PhD, MD, Wayne Plastic Surgeon)

There is no good cure for stretch marks, except skin excision. This, however, leaves you will a scar instead of the stretch mark. Liposuction has no effect on the appearance of stretch marks. If you have stretch marks in your lower abdomen, then you might want to consider abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) which will remove the marks and tighten up the skin on your abdomen. (David Shafer, MD, FACS, New York Plastic Surgeon)

Liposculpting and stretch marks

Removal of fat UNDER the skin cannot influence anything IN the skin. If the skin laxity is poor, removing the fat may make the skin appear looser and more droopy but it will not improve or worsen the cracks in the skin we refer to as stretch marks. (Peter A. Aldea, MD, Memphis Plastic Surgeon)

Liposuction Wll Not Help Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are from damaged skin, and lipo will have little if any effect on them. If you have lax skin from pregnancy or weight loss, lipo may actually make your skin appear worse. (John LoMonaco, MD, FACS, Houston Plastic Surgeon)
