Statement: Elizabeth Alexandra Zubowicz, MD, FACS, FASMBS is a board-certified general surgeon. She specializes in bariatric surgery and hernia surgery. She performs both open as well as minimally invasive surgery, with a focus on robotic surgery and its advancement in the realm of general surgery. She has performed over 1000 bariatric procedures and has a passion for helping patients get healthier.

One of the biggest concerns post bariatric surgery is “loose skin.” After so much hard work and effort to lose weight and get healthier, patients still have this loose skin that can significantly impact their quality of life and self-image. Skin removal surgery is rarely covered by insurance and can be an extremely long and painful recovery.

In addition, being a mother of 2, she personally felt the body image challenges of having permanent loose/sagging abdominal skin no matter how many crunches after having babies. After extensive research, Dr. Zubowicz was impressed by the significant results from minimally laser techniques for loose/wrinkled skin and decided to incorporate it into her practice.

This market-leading body-contouring technology can be used on many areas of the body and can help improve skin laxity after weight loss, pregnancy or aging. It is also great for removing those last stubborn areas of fat that just can’t be lost no matter how much weight one loses.

She is extremely excited to now offer these skin tightening and rejuvenating techniques as well as other minimally invasive approaches to graceful aging and improved overall body wellness at Thrive Medspa.

Dr. E. Alexandra Zubowicz is a board-certified general surgeon and a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery as well as the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Zubowicz received her medical degree from University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. She completed her residency at the Georgetown-Medstar General Surgery Residency Program in Washington, DC. She has presented at numerous regional and national conferences and has been published in multiple peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Zubowicz is originally from Atlanta, Georgia. She has an interest in medical mission work and has been on several medical mission trips, in both Ecuador and in the Philippines. Her husband is active duty with the United States Army, and they have two daughters Gabrielle and Sophia.

I am looking for answers regarding vomiting right after you wake up from gastric sleeve surgery.
Postoperative nausea
Feb 16, 2018
Most centers now use minimal narcotics and start anti-nausea meds even before the surgery starts. Postoperative nausea is still expected but much less now that less narcotics (morphine) is used. The important thing is to take small sips after the surgery and follow the postoperative diet given to you.
How many patients get off medication for diabetes after having gastric sleeve gastronomy?
Hugely Successful for Diabetes
Oct 26, 2017
Nearly 100% of patients have to take fewer medications for their diabetes and close to 90% are off all medications entirely. Weight loss surgery is actually even more successful for treating diabetes than for weight loss!
How often do I see a dietician for bariatric surgery?
Depends upon Insurance…
Oct 21, 2017
In general you need one visit per month for either 3 or 6 months prior to qualifying for surgery. Regulations are being less and less strict, as companies are catching up to how successful these procedures are- so call your insurance company to confirm what their specific rules are. I encourage you to go to an actual “center of excellence” that is full service to get the best results. They should have everything in one place that you need to fullfill all insurance…
1 year post op gastric sleeve, my weight fluctuates between 168 and 170. What can I do to lose m
Exercise!!!
Oct 20, 2017
I can’t stress enough the importance of exercise!! Sugar free sweets on occasion are fine. Eating well balanced meals high in protein/vegetables low in starches/carbohydrates, you shouldn’t have to relegate yourself to only protein shakes to lose more weight. At this point, protein shakes are good when you’re in a hurry and don’t have time for an actual meal (like in the morning for breakfast).
The absolute most important thing for continued weight loss and long term…
Will I qualify for VSG with insurance?
Depends upon Insurance…
Oct 20, 2017
But yes you should qualify. In general it’s BMI 35 + 2 medical issues or BMI 40 and above. Ultimately, it’s up to the insurance that you have- just give them a call and they should let you know the exact requirements.

You’re Ok

You’ll be fine. Try to stick to the right kinds of foods though. In order to be successful long term, it’s all about sticking to healthy diet selections and EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE.

When you’re craving pizza, try a healthy version of pizza- flat bread instead of crust, low fat cheese, light pizza sauce with turkey sausage instead of regular sausage. You can satisfy your craving and still be healthy.

5’1 and 186 pounds. Am I eligible for gastric sleeve?
Possible based upon Insurance
Oct 20, 2017
Hi there,
you may be a candidate- in general it is a BMI of 35 or greater with two medical conditions or 40 or greater on its own. However, different insurance companies have different requirements and they are becoming less and less strict, as we are seeing what a huge success the weight loss surgeries are for people. Pre-diabetes can count, arthritis can count (if you have joint pain), elevated liver enzymes, sleep apnea- you may have some of these issues and not even know it…
