The main purpose of the plastic surgery surgery for liposuction, as well as liposculpture, is modeling the contours of the patient’s body with the removal of a certain number of fat cells, in which the excess fat is concentrated due to genetic predisposition.
Liposuction is not and should not be considered as an alternative solution that can replace diet for weight loss or proper nutrition in general, helping to limit and control the excess concentration of body fat.
The fat cells removed as a result of liposuction are not re-formed, hence, the removed fat will never return. The operation, called liposuction, is one of the most requested procedures by patients, information about which is often searched also on the network.
In this connection, the use of terms such as liposuction, liposculpture, microliposculpture, megaliposuction and others, which create some confusion for those who seek to solve the problem of excess fat in certain parts of the body, can be seen on the Internet and in the monthly literature.
The reason for the accumulation of fat
Numerous studies have shown that during adolescent development our body produces fat cells called adipocytes. They are responsible for the accumulation of fat. After the onset of puberty, the number of adipocytes no longer increases with time.
Only the volume of these cells changes. Consequently, weight gain is due to an increase in the volume of fat cells. There are no factors that could help us understand how and which of these cells will change over time, and which ones will remain at the same level.
This is because the changes are the result of numerous parallel causes, first of all it is a hereditary factor, that is, our DNA, which can be followed by hormonal dysfunction (innate or acquired) and, naturally, a wrong lifestyle and unhealthy diet.
Regardless of the reasons that triggered the accumulation of fat, our body is constantly changing. And even despite the efforts made to lose the gained pounds, the arrow of the weights sometimes remains in the same place. It is this lack of results that prompts many people to think about the operation of liposuction or liposculpture.
Based on the last statement, the plastic surgeon would like to clarify that the accumulation of fat in some areas is not due solely to excess pounds, as in people who do not have excess weight (weight in the norm), you can notice the changes in the silhouette caused by the concentration of fat material only in certain parts of the body.
This predisposition is innate. In other words, if the hereditary factor suggests that the accumulation of stocks (physiological and natural) of fatty material represented by adipocytes should be on the buttocks, sides and hips, a diet or sport will not help change this rule dictated by the mother-nature.
Naturally, a healthy diet, combined with diets with moderate calorie reduction, and physical activity can improve the appearance, but can never solve the problem at the root, since every single fat reserve the body deems necessary will be located in zones genetically engineered for its accumulation.
Accumulation of fat: the difference between a man and a woman
As mentioned above, it is impossible to determine in advance which adipocytes will change their volume with time, and which will remain unchanged, because this predisposition is mainly genetic. However, over the years, medicine and, in particular, plastic surgery have been able to distinguish two different types of people on the basis of gender (gynoid and android), depending on different zones of fat accumulation.
A woman (type of gynoid) is the lower half of the body. Excess fat is easy to see in areas such as buttocks (especially the lower and outer parts), hips, knees, legs and even arms. Liposuction in a patient like a gynoid will be aimed at sucking off the fatty material concentrated in the above-described areas.
In a man (type android), critical areas prone to increase the volume of adipocytes and, therefore, excessive accumulation of fat, the following: the sides (the so-called “love handles”), abdomen, thorax and chest.
Differences between a man and a woman regarding areas in which fat is concentrated in the most obvious way, are not as clear as it may seem. Often in the summer on the beach you can see women with excess concentration of fat on their stomachs, and at the same time they have thin legs, like most men.
So, we have considered the reasons for the change in our body due to weight gain. We also pointed to the existing differences between a man and a woman (although it will be more accurate to say – between the two types of people described).
What answer can plastic surgery give to this problem?
The main approach that underlies the solution offered by plastic surgery, and combines the various surgical techniques that have been used and developed over time – to suck fat, in a word “lipoaspiration”.
Why then there are so many terms, for example, liposuction, liposculpture, megaliposuction, and so on?
What is the difference between liposuction and liposculpture?
The answer, which gives year after year to his patients in published articles and in interviews, is: there are basically two reasons for the existence of a large number of terms, meaning the suction of excess fat.
The first reason: the techniques of liposuction, starting with the first, defined as “dry”, and ending with the actual “tumescent liposuction” (also called wet), considering also “ultrasonic liposuction”, over the years developed and mutated. The same can be said about the improvement of surgical instruments used by doctors in the operating room.
The second reason explaining the confusion in the numerous definitions of liposuction is the fact that magazines, the Internet and in general the media very often use them inaccurately and indiscriminately. It seems that all these terms are synonymous, although in fact it is not.
