The timing of the chin strap to be worn after a neck liposuction procedure really depends on the type of neck liposuction technique used by your surgeon.
In my practice, I have my patients where the neck strap 16 hours a day for a week then 8 hours a day for 2 weeks thereafter. If they sleep in it, it still counts.
However, following the advice of your surgeon is more important than the opinions of other surgeons who have never examined you nor operated on you.
Not all of us perform the same named procedure the same way! (Mike Majmundar, MD, Atlanta Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Chin Strap following Chin Liposuction
Wearing a chin strap to apply compression following liposuction is key to achieving the best possible result. The strap not only improves swelling of the area but reduces the likelihood of developing a collection of blood or fluid by applying direct compression.
This will expedite the recovery process and maximize the result. I recommend wearing the strap as much as realistically possible for the first two weeks and then while in the house or when going to sleep for the subsequent four weeks. (Jeffrey Weinzweig, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)
Sculpting the chin, jaw and face
The long the better. I also would ask my patients to wear it for 2 wks. Almost no body does though haha. This allows the skin to scar into position and squeezes out all of the edema and swelling to make the results appreciable more quickly. (Benjamin Caughlin, MD, Chicago Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Lipo garment for chin
It is best to wear it for three weeks. For optimal result it is best to have the compression band on. (Afshin Farzadmehr, MD, Los Angeles Dermatologic Surgeon)
Wearing the neck strap
I ask my patients to wear a neck strap for five to seven days (depends on their back to work plans) and I ask them to wear it while sleeping only for the second week, then I discontiue the neck strap.
Most patients are eager to get back to normal. In my experience this has been adequat, but the best advice is to listen to your doctor. (Stephan Finical, MD, Charlotte Plastic Surgeon)
How long does it chinstrap need to be worn after a neck lift / liposuction
In our practice, we do not use chin straps or compression garments, we use Jackson Pratt suction drains for the first 2 days after the procedure. Patient’s return to the office 2 days after their surgical procedure and the drains are slipped out from behind the ears. The drains serve the function of removing blood and serous fluid from underneath the neck. (William Portuese, MD, Seattle Facial Plastic Surgeon)
Length of time to wear chin strap
Post-operative care is very important after any surgery. Surgeon’s recommendations are more than likely based on experience he/she has had in the past and what has aided in having an excellent result from the surgery.
Whether or not it is excessive is going to change per surgeon’s personal experiences. Just keep in mind if you do not follow your surgeon’s post-operative recommendations and your result is not what you want, who is to blame? (Robert Kratschmer, MD, Houston Plastic Surgeon)
I like for my patients to wear this supporting strap under their chin and neck fours long as a week for 24 hours a day if possible. However, many of my patients work or return to social activities sooner than that and cannot wear the supporting garment.
So in those instances I have patients where the garment is much as possible and all night every night for two weeks. In some cases when the strap is worn to tightly for too long I found it creates a groove in the tissues themselves so overuse of this garment can be detrimental. (Chase Lay, MD, Bay Area Facial Plastic Surgeon)
I prefer to use Laser-Assisted Liposuction (SmartLipo) for the neck area since it causes less swelling and quicker recovery. The chin strap must fit properly and not cause any crease in the skin. If worn properly, one week should be sufficient.
After that, it is a only needed if there is residual swelling. Some patients will wear it intermittently for a second week. (Martin O`Toole, MD, FACS, Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon)
How long to wear chin support after facial liposuction?
Everyone is different as far as how long to wear a support sling. The main factor I look at is the thickness of the neck skin, and how much swelling the patient has at the end of the first week.
In my practice I recommend 24 hours a day for the first week. If a patient has little swelling, they are then finished. If they have some swelling, I recommend wearing it at night for another 2-3 weeks. (Brian Maloney, MD, FACS, Atlanta Facial Plastic Surgeon)
A chin strap is recommended for 6 weeks after chin liposuction but only when convenient.
I ask patients to wear a neck support (provided) for about 6 weeks but only at convenient times. This is not critical for a good result but probably teases the area to be a bit smoother. Most patients don’t mind this at all. (Vincent N. Zubowicz, MD, Atlanta Plastic Surgeon)
Duration of neck strap depends on the procedure you have done.
Duration of neck strap depends on the procedure you have done. When all I offered was tumescent liposuction that was similar to the instructions that I gave my patients. Now that I also offer SmartLipo my patients only wear the neck girdle for 5 days (24 hours a day) and then only at night for another 5 days. (Richard H. Fryer, MD, Salt Lake City Plastic Surgeon)
This varies tremendously from surgeon to surgeon. In my practice, we have found wearing a mild compressive garment for the first night is critical. After than an elastic neck garment is worn at night only for the next 6 weeks.
Some of my patients like the feeling of wearing a supportive garment and do wear it day and night for the first few weeks though. Remember that compression is one of the key elements in healing, particularly mild supportive compression.(Anil R. Shah, MD, Chicago Facial Plastic Surgeon)
I will usually have patients wear it for the first few days 24 hours. When they go back to work, I just have them wear it at night for a week or two. (Steven Wallach, MD, New York Plastic Surgeon)
I personally ask the patient to wear the chin strap night and day for a week then dispose of it. I believe it helps compress the tunnels from the liposuction which would otherwise fill up with fluid.
This speeds the recovery as it causes less swelling. (Richard P. Rand, MD, FACS, Seattle Plastic Surgeon)
Don’t need chin strap after liposuction of the chin and neck.
We hardly ever use a chin strap after liposuction of the chin and neck. And when we do, it is just for a few days. (George J. Beraka, MD (retired), Manhattan Plastic Surgeon)
There are plastic surgeons who recomend to wear a compression garment after liposuction for a long time and others who don’t recomend any compression. I ftell my patients to wear it for thre or four days.
It seems to lessen the bruising and swelling. I don’t think it is necessary to wear it for several weeks. But remember if your doctor was trusted with the surgery he should be also trusted with the post op instructions. (Farhad Rafizadeh, MD, Morristown Plastic Surgeon)
Two weeks is a good duration. You want to prevent any fluid accumulation in the neck that can lead to contour irregularities down the line. (Mohammed Alghoul, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)
I recommend that patients wear the chin strap for 3 days, full time, and at night for two weeks thereafter. This reduces the propensity for swelling and speeds recuperation. (Robert L. Kraft, MD, FACS, New York Plastic Surgeon)
Keep your chin with the chin strap
Typically, compression garments are worn for a total of six weeks after liposuction. The garment allows the skin to conform to the new contour of your chin, it minimizes swelling in the area that can occur of the six week period after surgery and finally it minimizes the potential for fluid to develop beneath the skin.
The best candidates for liposuction are those that have elastic skin and despite good skin quality a compression garment is need to ensure that best result. (Earl Stephenson, Jr., MD, DDS, FACS, Atlanta Plastic Surgeon)
