Statement: Dr. Edmund Kwan is a board-certified plastic surgeon with private practices in Manhattan, New York; Flushing, Queens; and Fort Lee, New Jersey, serving the greater New York City and Tri-State area.

With advanced training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Kwan performs a wide range of procedures for the face, breast, and body, including body contouring, breast enhancement, and dermal fillers and injectables.

Though he treats patients of all backgrounds and ethnicities, Dr. Kwan is best known for his specialization in Asian plastic surgery. He is renowned for his exceptional work maintaining the integrity of his Asian patients’ features, while providing them with the aesthetic look they desire.

Dr. Kwan was born in Seoul, South Korea, and immigrated to the United States with his family at 9 years old. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and underwent full training in general surgery before completing a residency in plastic surgery at Cornell-New York Presbyterian Hospital and a fellowship at Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital Center, both in New York City.

To further hone his skills and expertise, Dr. Kwan pursued training in hand surgery at New York’s prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery; craniofacial trauma training, through which he reconstructed complex fractures of facial bones, at the Baltimore Shock Trauma Center at Johns Hopkins; and a unique fellowship in aesthetic plastic surgery in Honolulu. For this training, Dr. Kwan relocated to Hawaii to study under Dr. Robert S. Flowers, a trailblazer in the field of Asian plastic surgery who has specialized in this category since the 1960s.

Board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Kwan is passionate about supporting the members of his community through his expertise in Asian plastic surgery, which is rare among plastic surgeons. He has spent the entirety of his 26-year career mastering surgical techniques that don’t Westernize an Asian face, but rather enhance the smallest details, to bring out his patients’ natural beauty. Every patient is different, which is why he takes a customized approach to treatment.

When not seeing patients, Dr. Kwan stays busy in his role as clinical assistant professor of plastic surgery at New York Medical College and Cornell University Medical College. He also acts as an attending surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

In his free time, Dr. Kwan stays active in the medical community through his membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, as well as by traveling to attend plastic surgery conferences and seminars, where he is often a guest speaker.

He also enjoys using his surgical skills to help support underserved communities, and volunteers his time annually to travel with medical missions teams to countries in South America and Africa.

Additionally, Dr. Kwan is the author of Let It Flow, a book about the connection between efficient blood circulation and an improved quality of life.

Will I sag from cheekbone reduction?
sagging from cheek
May 10, 2021
Cheekbone reduction involves making cuts on the bone and recessing the bone back. The soft tissue holds the fracture in place. With young patients the skin and muscle will not sag following surgery. I have performed hundreds of these surgeries over the past 20 years. Scars are mostly inside of the mouth. I have not seen any soft tissue descent. From your picture, you seem like a good candidate for this surgery.
How can I make the most of my features after Botox to the masseter made my cheekbones wide and asymmetr
wide cheeks
May 10, 2021
Sometimes Botox injection to the jaw muscle can accentuate a wider cheekbone. Usually, facial bones are enlarged uniformly. So, if the jaw is wide, the cheekbone is also wide. Cheekbone reduction involves making cuts on the cheekbone and recessing it back. I don't use any plates or screws. The soft tissue will hold it in place. The bone heals in 3 to 4 weeks. The scars are mostly inside of the mouth. I have performed many of these surgeries over the past 20 years. I also perform rhinoplasty...
What can be done to correct my very prominent chin?
prominent chin
May 10, 2021
To correct prominent chin, a chin reduction surgery can be done. However, we need to make sure that your bite is correct. If your teeth from the upper jaw line up with the teeth from your lower jaw, then your bite is ok. We can then proceed with a chin reduction surgery. You also have a slight mid face retrusion or recessed. If your chin is the only thing that concerns you then you can have a chin reduction procedure. The surgery is done from an incision underneath the chin. The scar is...
How much can I expect to be able to remove with an orbital bone reduction?
brow prominence
Apr 19, 2021
Brow bone is prominent in many people. Your prominence is over the frontal sinus. The frontal bone has some thickness that can be reduced. I have performed many brow reduction and also reduction over the frontal sinus. My approach is usually through an incision in the hairline or in the scalp. In some patients, I've used an incision at the eyebrow to limit the scar. The frontal bone can be shaved or taken down safely.
My left eyebrow seems to droop and is significantly less arched than my right eyebrow. Options? (photos
asymmetric brows
Apr 19, 2021
Brow asymmetry is very common. When the brows are uneven, this will also affect the appearance of the upper eyelid fold. From the picture, your left upper eyelid is higher as well. Sometimes, there could be an issue elevating the eyebrow on one side. However, if you are able to elevate both eyebrows , then a brow lift may be needed to restore symmetry. Brow lifting procedure is a very surgery I perform. I' ve been performing brow lift for over 20 years.
If HA paste is placed on the cheekbones, can this be shaved off a year down the road?

How do I get a more defined side profile?
jawline
Apr 5, 2021
Jawline definition is important for a man to have a more masculine face. The jawline augmentation is what I think you need. Jaw angle implants are placed to augment the jawline and give a more muscular appearance. The implants are placed through an incision inside of the mouth. I also recommend either a chin implant and/or liposuction of the neck and lower face. This will give you a more chiseled look. The chin implant will restore the balance to your face and make the neckline cleaner. I...
What procedures do I need done to make my lower face smaller?
smaller face
Apr 5, 2021
By pulling your cheeks up, you are effectively slimming the jawline. To make the lower part of your face smaller, both the jaw and the chin need to be reshaped. The jaw can be wide and prominent due to both the bone and the muscle. I find that many patients have jaw muscle that is very thick. The jaw reduction surgery involves, filing down the jawbone and debulking the masseter muscle. This will give you much slimmer jawline. The surgery is done from inside of the mouth. The chin is...
Should I do another jaw surgery, or reduce my cheekbones?
cheekbone reduction
Apr 5, 2021
Your lower face appears slimmer than the upper face. This can happen after v-line surgery. The cheekbone can be reduced as well. I would narrow the width of your face by reducing the zygoma. The bone has two components, the body and the arch. I make two cuts on the bone, one in front of the face and the other on the side. Then I recess the bone without screws or plates and the incisions are all hidden, mostly inside of the mouth. The bone is held in position by the soft tissue. I have been...
What is cheekbone anterolateral reduction? My goal is to make my midface more slim.
cheekbone
Apr 5, 2021
Hi, yes your cheekbones are prominent, especially the right side. Your cheekbone or the zygoma is both prominent and wide. The cheekbone has 2 components, the body and the arch. The body gives the prominence and the arch gives the width. During cheekbone reduction surgery, both he body and the arch is reduced.I make cuts on the bones instead of grinding it down. The problem of grinding the bone downs that the bones are not that thick. You will only see minimal improvement. Instead the entire...
Wide face help! What options are there for cheekbone/zygoma reduction in the US?
cheekbone reduction
Apr 5, 2021
Hi, reviewing your photos, you have a wide cheekbone. The zygoma is extends from the front to the side of the face. The side of the face is called the arch of the zygoma. When a reduction surgery is done, the cheekbone is cut at two places. The front of the face and the side of the face. By making cuts on the bone, the bone can then be recessed in a reduced position. I use no plates for screws. The bone is held in place by the soft tissue. The scars are all hidden inside of the mouth. I have...
East Asian rhinoplasty: do I need an alar base reduction or increased height in my bridge?
Asian nose
Mar 8, 2021
Your nose tip is droopy and needs to be supported. I use a cartilage that is obtained from inside of your nose to place it at the tip of the nose. This will give your nose a better projection. You do have a human the nose. This can be smoothed out or left alone. I performed many Asian rhinoplasty over the past 20 years. I usually address the bridge of the nose together with the tip. However, i also have performed many tiplasty and tip graft alone.
Would I be a suitable candidate for chin implants?
chin implant
Mar 8, 2021
Chin implant can be one of the most rewarding surgery for the patient. When the chin is small, the nose can look too large. Also, the lower half of the face looks deficient. Chin implant is a relatively simple surgery. By placing an implant through an incision inside of your mouth, the balance to your face can be restored. You will probably need a larger implant and I use an extended, glove type implant to augment the chin. You will not have an external scar. The nose will look better. The...
Is Korea the best choice to have cheekbone reduction? I prefer to have it done here the most.
Cheek reduction
Mar 8, 2021
Cheek bone reduction surgery involves reducing the cheekbone or the zygoma. This is a very strong and hardy bone. Therefore, I usually do a complete osteotomy or cutting the bone. I make two cuts on the bone, one anteriorly and one posteriorly. Then the bone can be repositioned in a reduced position. In patients with very prominent bone, i sometimes remove a piece of the bone. I do not use any metal plates or wires. The bone heals well in a reduced position. I have performed hundreds of...
Is surgery on one side possible as my jaw bone is uneven due to missing molars?
jaw reduction
Mar 8, 2021
Yes, jaw reduction surgery is possible on one side of the face. Although, usually both sides are done, I have performed surgery on one side to achieve symmetry. An incision made inside of the mouth and the bone is reduced and sometimes muscle is also reduced. The surgery takes about an hour to hour and a half. We offer 3-D imaging and complimentary consultation both in person or through Skype. Thank you.
