Burning Sensation After Liposuction

Liposuction is a combination of fat removal and fat re-sculpting. Postoperative burning is normal, both from the acidic pH of the lidocaine, and from pain as the local anesthetic wears off. Areas of numbness and itching are also common. (Karen Vaniver, MD, Kennewick Plastic Surgeon)

After like a suction patients may expect to experience swelling, bruising, and some mild abnormal sensations.

Some patients describe sensations after liposuction as small areas of numbness, tingling,or as if that part of their body has fallen asleep.

This may be due to some of the nerves in this area having been stretched during the liposuction procedure. Although this is not common, it is a possible risk to this surgery.

If the nerve has been stretched or bruised, you can expect to have these sensations until the nerve repairs itself.

If the nerve has been cut, you can expect to have an area of numbness that may return to normal if the nerve is able to regenerate itself accurately. (Pat Pazmino, MD, FACS, Miami Plastic Surgeon)

Liposcution can be painful postop, and beyond that, it can be uncomfortable for weeks after the procedure. Swelling, itching, numbness, and burning may be experienced for a while during recovery as well. Keep in touch with your doctor if symptoms get worse. (Scott E. Kasden, MD, FACS, Dallas Plastic Surgeon)

Tumescent liposuction can cause some burning sensation postop

The burning sensationmay be related to several factors. The tumescent fluid your physician injected contains lidocaine which may cause some burning.

The trauma from the procedure, as well as the possibility of irritating the sensory nerves in the area, may also contribute to the burning sensation. This sensation should subside over the next several days to weeks. (David A. Robinson, MD, Munster Plastic Surgeon)
